Constructing a coop is one of the most vital early-game milestones for any farmer looking to generate steady daily income in Stardew Valley. Housing chickens, ducks, and other farm birds allows you to produce eggs and Mayo, providing reliable profits year-round. Understanding the precise resource requirements and construction process ensures your farm expansion runs smoothly without unexpected delays.

Gathering Materials and Gold for the Basic Coop

Before visiting Carpenter's Shop, you must gather all the required raw supplies and currency. A standard coop requires 4,000 gold, 300 pieces of Wood, and 100 pieces of Stone. Clearing trees and breaking large boulders around your farm will yield enough resources within your first few weeks.

If you lack enough materials, Robin offers Wood and Stone for sale directly at her store, though gathering them manually saves valuable gold. Securing the necessary funds early is best done by selling crops, fishing, or forage items around Pelican Town.

Visiting Robin and Placing the Building

Once you have gathered the required items, head north to Robin's Carpenter Shop located in the Mountain region. Her shop is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM most days, except Tuesdays and early Fridays. Select the Construct Farm Buildings option from her shop menu to locate the basic coop.

After purchasing the building, you will be taken to a view of your farm grid to pick the exact location. Make sure to clear grass, weeds, logs, and stones beforehand so there is a free 6x3 tile space ready for placement.

Understanding the Construction Timeline

Robin begins working on your farm the morning after you place the order. The construction process takes exactly three full in-game days to complete. During this time, Robin will not offer her usual shop services or upgrades, so plan accordingly.

You can monitor her progress by visiting the construction site on your farm each morning. Once completed, the building is immediately functional and ready to welcome its first animal inhabitants.

Purchasing Animals and Setting Up Your Coop

With the coop built, you can head south to Marnie's Ranch to purchase your first chickens. Each chicken costs 800 gold and comes in white or brown varieties, producing standard eggs daily once fully grown. Remember to keep Hay inside the coop's feeding bench or allow access to fresh grass outdoors.

As your farm prospers, you can return to Robin to upgrade to a Big Coop or Deluxe Coop. Upgrades expand housing capacity, introduce new animal types like ducks or rabbits, and unlock automatic feeding systems.
